The WMMFA is the manufacturer board-directed authority created by state law to handle the recycling of certain electronics in the state of Washington. Our job is to follow state law and guidelines as set forth by the department of Ecology to create a standard plan that manufacturers will participate in and finance. We coordinate collectors, transporters and processors to recycle covered electronics, then bill participating member manufacturers for the costs. Starting January 1st, 2009 covered electronics: TVs, Computer Monitors, Laptops and Computer towers will be recycled. The plan does not cover printers, scanners, keyboards, mice or other accessories.

With the guidance and input of many stakeholders in the Washington State Electronics recycling plan, financed by electronic products manufacturers, the WMMFA (Washington Materials Management and Financing Authority) has set up a comprehensive network consisting of over 220 collection sites, state wide, from which to accept unwanted electronic devices.  The plan, 2 months into operations, has collected over 6 million pounds of unwanted electronics to date, exceeding pounds expectations by 30% +.  The Authority is proud of the fact that almost all of the collection sites, transporters, and processors participating were already in existence in various types of businesses, and operating before entering into agreements with the Authority.  Our goal, as directed by the law, is to use Washington State based infrastructure and service providers, wherever possible, and to establish fair compensation to service providers based on the nature and scope of services performed.

Each of our processors is required to submit annual audits and must be approved as a processor by the WA state Department of Ecology and the WMMFA to ensure responsible recycling processes and destinations for materials of concern.

This is a new program designed to facilitate the responsible recycling of devices with potentially harmful materials and to provide reuse for working whole units as received by some collectors. The site network as presented today will improve over time to include additional sites to serve the needs of households and other covered entities more conveniently.  Please refer to the collection network locations via the link referenced frequently as the network is expected to change, and improve in geographical coverage over time.
