The WMMFA is the manufacturer board-directed authority created by state law to handle the recycling of certain electronics in the state of Washington. Our job is to follow state law and guidelines set forth by the department of Ecology to create a standard plan that manufacturers will participate in and finance. We coordinate collectors, transporters and recyclers to recycle covered electronics, then bill participating member manufacturers for the costs. Starting January 1st, 2009 covered electronics: TVs, Computer Monitors, Laptops and Computer towers will be recycled. The plan does not cover printers, scanners, keyboards, mice or other accessories.
News update:
There will be a public hearing held in the third quarter of 2008 for the public to provide comments, ask questions, and receive more information concering the Authority's operating plans for the January 1st kick off of operations. The hearing will provide information concering plan operating procedures, funding for contracted services, and standards for service providers. The exact date and location will be released soon through several media outlets including this web site.
A Note from the Executive Director of WMMFA
May 30, 2008
Dear Washington State residents and e-waste recycling stakeholders,
Welcome to our new web page. As we near the operational start date of January 1, 2009 the authority is in the process of improving and updating its web site to provide easier access to more information about the collection and distribution of e-waste within Washington State for consumers, participating service providers, and, the manufacturers whom fund the entire operation. Sections of the site are continually updated as plans develop so please refer to it frequently for updates.
The authority (WMMFA) is making progress towards start up operations January 1st, 2009. The standard plan and operating plans for the authority, which provide rules and guidance for the financing, implementation, and ongoing operations, are in the process of being finalized. The development of educational and informational materials for the public are being developed as a joint effort with Ecology, county governments, retailer representatives, non-profits and other stakeholders interested in participating. WMMFA staff have begun to contact potential collectors, transporters, and processors to discuss details of participation as service providers for the plan.
We will be scheduling a public hearing to accept comments on our operations plan sometime in the 3rd quarter of 2008. The plan will be available for public review for sometime before the hearing so stay tuned to this page for updated information as to date, time and location of this hearing.
On behalf of the member manufacturers funding this recycling plan I would like to thank all of the stakeholders including the Washington State Department of Ecology, state and local governments, recycling associations, consultants, and the public at large that have helped make this plan providing free recycling of these electronic products a reality.
Sincerely,

What Is the Authority?
The Authority
was formed to set up, fund, and operate a collection, transportation and processing network for the collection,
transportation and recycling of used and discarded televisions, desktops,
laptops and monitors. By establishing a collection network throughout the state the Authority plan will provide free drop off locations for Washington’s households. In addition to the drop off locations the plan will provide alternate collection service to small businesses, small local governments, school systems and charities.
The Authority’s program to manage covered electronics products (CEP's) is
called the Standard Plan.
