The WMMFA is the manufacturer board-directed authority created by state law to handle the recycling of certain electronics in the state of Washington. Our job is to follow state law and guidelines as set forth by the department of Ecology to create a standard plan that manufacturers will participate in and finance. We coordinate collectors, transporters and processors to recycle covered electronics, then bill participating member manufacturers for the costs. Starting January 1st, 2009 covered electronics: TVs, Computer Monitors, Laptops and Computer towers will be recycled. The plan does not cover printers, scanners, keyboards, mice or other accessories.
News update:
The date, time and location for the Authority's public hearing on its General Operating Plan have been selected. The details are outlined in the notice included with the newsletter below.
August 15, 2008
Dear Washington State residents and e-waste recycling stakeholders,
I am very happy to report that the Authority’s “Standard Plan” originally submitted to Ecology in February of this year was approved (conditionally) on July 17th. You may view the plan, as approved, by accessing a link on this web site. I would like to thank the many contributors that helped edit and refine the original submission into a final working plan. Agreements have been, and continue to be made with collectors, transporters and processors to ensure effective implementation of the electronic recycling system on January 1, 2009. The collector network is still under development, a listing of convenient drop off locations will be provided as locations are added.
Through the efforts of an outreach workgroup a dedicated web page URL address will be released soon. This site will contain information and tips about recycling electronics including a listing of the “free” drop off locations. Marketing, branding materials and signage are being created to use in helping the public identify collection sites and understand what will happen to their devices.
The implementation of the “Standard Plan” will contribute towards diverting millions of pounds of unwanted electronics from Washington State landfills and potentially irresponsible disposal. The preferred processing standards adopted by the manufacturers as approved by the Department of Ecology are outlined within the approved “Standard Plan” available for review (via link) on this web site. The Authority has posted its General Operating Plan on this web site as well. The notice below explains the details of the upcoming public hearing and comment period on the General Operating Plan.
Sincerely,
